CHAPTER 2: Sentence Structure and Grammatical Role Identification

Primary Skill: Parsing sentence structure to determine what part of speech the gap requires

Learning Objective: Given any sentence with a gap, the learner can (a) identify the main clause and any subordinate clauses, (b) determine the grammatical relationship of the gap to surrounding words, and (c) correctly identify the part of speech needed in at least 80% of cases.

If a learner cannot determine that a gap needs a noun, they cannot eliminate verbs and adjectives from the options. Every subsequent skill depends on this one.   1. Read the sentence containing the gap.
  2. Identify the main verb(s) of the sentence. Where is the subject? Where is the object?
  3. Locate the gap relative to these structural landmarks.
  4. Ask: "What role does the gap play in this sentence? Is it part of the subject? The object? A modifier? A connector?"
  5. Determine the part of speech needed using the pattern table above.
  6. Verify by checking: "If I put a [noun/verb/adjective/adverb] here, does the sentence parse correctly?"

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions:

  • Error: Assuming the gap always needs the same part of speech as the word before or after it. → Not necessarily. The gap might be in a different phrase.
  • Error: Not recognizing reduced clauses. "The data ___ by the researchers" needs a past participle (passive voice), but learners may not see this if they don't recognize the reduced relative clause.
  • Error: Confusing complements and modifiers. A gap might be a complement (required by the verb) rather than an optional modifier, which changes what part of speech is needed.
  • Misconception: "I need to know grammar terminology to do this." → The learner needs to recognize patterns, not necessarily name them with technical terms. However, knowing key terms (subject, verb, object, complement, modifier, clause) facilitates learning.
