Step-by-Step Reasoning Process:

  1. Read the entire paragraph (not just the sentence with the gap).
  2. Identify the paragraph's main idea and its direction (What is it arguing? Where is it going?).
  3. If the gap appears to be a connector or transition, identify what relationship the gap signals between the surrounding sentences (addition, contrast, cause-effect, etc.).
  4. If the gap appears to be a reference word, trace back to find the referent.
  5. If the gap is a content word, check whether the paragraph context constrains the meaning (e.g., the paragraph is about negative effects, so the gap should be negative).
  6. Apply the elimination cascade (Ch 6) with the paragraph-level constraint included.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions:

  • Error: Not reading the paragraph — only reading the sentence with the gap. → This misses discourse-level clues entirely.
  • Error: Misidentifying the discourse relationship. → "The costs were high. ___, the benefits outweighed them." Learners may think "therefore" fits, but the relationship is concessive, not causal — "Nevertheless" or "Nonetheless" is correct.
  • Error: Choosing a connector based on its meaning in isolation without checking the discourse relationship. → "Moreover" and "However" both connect sentences, but they signal different relationships.
