Every re-order paragraph has exactly one sentence that must come first, and identifying it quickly is the foundation of the entire task. The opening sentence in an academic paragraph introduces its subject using broad, general language that requires no prior context — a pattern that remains remarkably consistent across all four PTE Academic domains. Students who fail to recognise this pattern waste valuable time testing random orderings, when the first sentence was signalled all along.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to identify the first sentence of a re-order paragraph by testing whether a sentence is context-independent and by distinguishing broad introductory noun phrases from specific or referential ones.

The Context Independence Test asks whether a sentence can stand alone without any prior context. To apply it, read the sentence in isolation and ask: could a stranger with no background information understand this sentence completely? If the sentence introduces a broad concept, theory, or event using general language that does not presuppose any previously mentioned content, it passes the test and is a candidate for the opening position. Sentences that contain demonstratives (this, these, such), definite references to paragraph-specific content, or comparative language pointing back to something already discussed fail the test. This approach is the most reliable starting point for any re-order paragraph because academic writing consistently establishes context before elaborating.
A first sentence must make complete sense to a reader who has never encountered any other sentence in the paragraph.
Students often select a sentence as the opener because it sounds authoritative or introduces a famous concept, without testing whether it contains referential language that requires prior context. A sentence can be highly specific and still be context-independent — what matters is whether it refers back to other sentences, not whether it names particular people or events.

First sentences in academic paragraphs typically introduce their subject using broad, general noun phrases — often preceded by indefinite articles (a, an) or used as unmodified general terms. By contrast, sentences that use definite articles (the) or demonstratives (this, that, these, those) to modify a noun typically presuppose that the noun has already been introduced in the paragraph. Recognising this article shift — from indefinite and general to definite and specific — is one of the fastest ways to identify the opening sentence. However, students must account for exceptions: proper nouns (the Treaty of Westphalia), well-known entities (the human brain), and generic uses of 'the' (the citizen militia as a concept) all use the definite article even when being introduced for the first time.
An indefinite article (a, an) before a main noun signals a first mention; a definite article (the) or demonstrative (this, these) before the same type of noun signals a back-reference.
Students sometimes treat every instance of 'the' as a referential signal, overlooking the fact that 'the' introduces well-known proper nouns, unique entities, and generic categories. The critical question is not whether 'the' appears, but whether the noun has already been mentioned in the paragraph.
