The Full Name Introduction (First Sentence)

Academic writing follows a strict convention: entities are formally introduced before being referenced with abbreviations, shortened names, or pronouns. This means that a sentence containing a full name or official title almost always precedes one using a shorthand reference. Learning to spot this pattern gives you a powerful and reliable anchor for identifying the first sentence in any re-order paragraph.

Goal

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to identify first-sentence candidates by recognising full names, official titles, and formal introductions of people, institutions, and technical terms.

Full Names vs. Pronouns and Abbreviations

7 exercises

When an academic text introduces a person or organisation, it uses their full name, often accompanied by a title, affiliation, or descriptive phrase. Subsequent references then use shortened names, pronouns, or possessive forms because the reader has already been given the formal introduction. A sentence containing a full name followed by a sentence using a pronoun or abbreviation is a reliable signal that the full-name sentence comes first. This pattern holds across all academic domains because readers need the formal introduction to understand who or what is being discussed.

Key Insight

A full name with a title or affiliation is almost always the first mention of a person or organisation in a paragraph, and any subsequent pronoun or shortened name confirms this sequence.

Common Mistake

Students often overlook the signal when the pronoun appears in a sentence that seems more 'important' or contains a key finding. Remember, the sentence with the full name sets the context; the sentence with the pronoun builds on it.

First Introductions of Institutions and Technical Terms

7 exercises

Academic paragraphs frequently introduce institutions, technical concepts, or geographical locations with a full definition or descriptive context before using the term independently. A sentence that defines a concept, contextualises an institution with founding details, or describes a location with geographical and historical specifics serves as the first mention. Subsequent sentences then use the established term without the defining apparatus, assuming the reader now understands what is being discussed. Recognising whether a sentence provides this defining context or merely uses an already-established term is the key to identifying the opening sentence.

Key Insight

If a sentence contains a formal definition, a founding context, or a descriptive introduction of a term or institution, it is almost certainly the first sentence; subsequent sentences use the already-established term freely.

Common Mistake

Students sometimes mistake a sentence that uses a term prominently or frequently for the introduction sentence. The key is not how often the term appears, but whether the sentence provides the defining context that a reader needs to encounter the term for the first time.
