Eliminating Impostors — The Fake First and Fake Last

Every re-order paragraph contains sentences that are structurally incapable of opening or closing the passage. Under exam time pressure, most students waste precious seconds testing every possible arrangement rather than eliminating the impossible ones first. Learning to disqualify impostor sentences — to reject them as confidently as you accept them — is the fastest way to reduce a complex arrangement problem to a manageable one.

Goal

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to rapidly disqualify sentences that cannot open or close a paragraph by recognising specific linguistic markers such as transition words, demonstrative pronouns, antecedentless pronouns, sequencing markers, and unresolved introductions.

The Impostor First Sentence

8 exercises

Certain sentences carry linguistic markers that immediately disqualify them from opening a paragraph. Transition words such as 'However,' 'Therefore,' 'Additionally,' and 'Consequently' signal that the sentence is responding to something already stated — without that preceding context, the sentence is grammatically orphaned. Demonstrative pronouns like 'These,' 'This,' and 'Such' require a prior antecedent to function. Personal pronouns ('He,' 'She,' 'They,' 'It') without an introduced referent are similarly dependent. Definite articles can sometimes signal dependence on established information, though this is a weaker marker that must be weighed against the sentence's overall function.

Key Insight

Any sentence that depends on prior context to make sense cannot be the first sentence — it is structurally incomplete without something before it.

Common Mistake

Students often focus on finding the 'best' first sentence rather than eliminating the impossible ones. This forward-searching approach wastes time and introduces second-guessing, when a single glance at the opening word of each sentence can immediately rule out impostors.

The Impostor Last Sentence

8 exercises

Just as certain sentences cannot open a paragraph, others cannot close it. A sentence that introduces a new character, concept, or technical term without resolving it leaves the reader expecting more — structurally, it belongs in the middle. Sequencing markers like 'firstly,' 'initially,' and 'in the first stage' signal that additional steps or stages will follow, making them fundamentally incompatible with a closing position. Similarly, sentences that identify an unresolved research gap or end with an open question cannot provide the sense of completion that a final sentence requires.

Key Insight

A sentence that opens a new thread rather than closing one is structurally incapable of being the last sentence — the reader would be left waiting for a resolution that never comes.

Common Mistake

Students sometimes choose the most 'conclusive-sounding' sentence as the last, even when it introduces a new term or framework that the paragraph has not yet developed. Conversely, they may overlook sequencing markers like 'firstly' or 'initially' that explicitly rule out a final position.
