Pronouns are among the most reliable grammatical signals available in the Re-order Paragraph task, yet many students overlook them because pronouns appear so naturally in everyday reading. Every pronoun — he, she, it, they, his, her, their, its — must refer back to a noun that has already been explicitly introduced, creating an unbreakable ordering constraint between sentences. Learning to trace each pronoun to its antecedent converts a confusing jumble of sentences into a map of definite relationships.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to identify pronoun–antecedent pairs across sentences and use them to establish fixed sequential links that determine the correct paragraph order.

In well-formed academic English, a pronoun cannot appear before the noun it refers to. This means that any sentence containing a pronoun — he, she, it, they, his, her, their, its — must come after the sentence that introduces the corresponding noun, known as the antecedent. This rule is absolute: there are no exceptions in standard academic prose. When you spot a pronoun in one sentence and the matching noun in another, you have discovered a locked pair. The sentence with the antecedent must precede the sentence with the pronoun, regardless of where these sentences appear in the full paragraph.
A pronoun is always a follower, never a leader — it can only point backward to something already named.
Students sometimes assume that 'it' or 'they' can introduce a new topic, when in fact these pronouns only work when their referent has already been established in a preceding sentence.

When multiple nouns of the same gender or number appear across sentences, a pronoun could theoretically refer to more than one antecedent. Disambiguation is the skill of determining which noun a pronoun actually refers to. First, check grammatical agreement: singular pronouns (he, she, it, his, her) must map to singular nouns, and plural pronouns (they, their) must map to plural nouns. Beyond grammar, the meaning of the sentence usually makes the correct mapping clear — a pronoun paired with a specific action or description will logically connect to only one candidate antecedent.
When two possible antecedents exist, grammar narrows the field and meaning resolves the final match.
Students often map a pronoun to the nearest noun of the correct gender or number, rather than checking whether the sentence's content logically connects to that noun. Proximity is not a reliable guide — logic is.
