Process paragraphs — those describing scientific experiments, manufacturing sequences, or administrative procedures — present a unique challenge in PTE Re-order tasks because their correct order depends on functional logic rather than grammatical markers. When no article shifts, pronouns, or connectors are visible, you must reconstruct the underlying process and determine which step logically precedes which. This chapter teaches you to recognise process paragraphs across academic domains and to use the dependency chain — the principle that each step produces the input required by the next — as your ordering scaffold.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to identify process paragraphs across scientific, technical, and procedural domains and reconstruct their correct order by asking 'What must exist before this step can happen?' for each sentence.

Process paragraphs describe a series of steps in a method, experiment, or procedure where each step functionally depends on the previous one. Unlike chronological paragraphs — which are ordered by when events occurred in time — process paragraphs are ordered by logical dependency: Step B cannot happen unless Step A has produced its required input. Recognising the process genre is the critical first step in ordering. If the paragraph describes a laboratory procedure, a manufacturing sequence, an administrative review, or a biological cycle, the ordering principle is procedural dependency, not temporal sequence. This recognition prevents you from being misled by incidental time words that happen to appear in the text.
A process paragraph's order is fixed by what each step requires as input, not by when the steps would occur in real time.
Students confuse process paragraphs with chronological paragraphs because both describe sequential activities. The surface form is similar, but the ordering logic is fundamentally different — and misidentifying the genre leads to incorrect reliance on time words instead of dependency chains.

A thin film of this solution is carefully deposited onto a polished sodium chloride plate and allowed to dry under ambient conditions.
The plate is positioned in the spectrometer beam, and the resulting absorption spectrum is recorded across the mid-infrared range.
The compound is dissolved in an infrared-transparent solvent to create a dilute solution suitable for spectral analysis.

The finished products are subjected to destructive testing at statistically determined intervals to confirm that each batch remains within acceptable tolerance limits.
Upon arrival at the manufacturing facility, raw materials are inspected to verify compliance with specified grade and purity requirements.
Materials that pass inspection are fed into the production line, where they undergo a series of transformations under tightly controlled temperature and pressure conditions.

These recommendations are formally tabled in parliament, where they undergo debate and a binding vote before any legislative changes are enacted.
The committee issues a public call for written submissions from affected stakeholders, including industry bodies, consumer advocacy groups, and independent experts.
A standing committee is appointed to evaluate whether the current regulatory framework has achieved its policy objectives within the designated review period.
Drawing on the accumulated evidence, the committee drafts a set of recommendations that may propose amendments to existing legislation or regulatory codes.

The cleaned sample is combusted in a sealed tube, and the resulting carbon dioxide is cryogenically purified for isotopic measurement.
A small fragment of organic material is extracted from the stratigraphic layer under sterile laboratory conditions to prevent modern carbon contamination.
An accelerator mass spectrometer measures the ratio of carbon-14 to stable carbon isotopes, producing a radiocarbon age that is subsequently calibrated against the international reference curve.
The fragment undergoes acid-base-acid pretreatment to remove humic acids and other contaminants that may have infiltrated the sample from surrounding sediments.

Process paragraphs describe a series of steps in a method or procedure where each step functionally depends on the one before it. The key reasoning question is: 'What must exist before this step can happen?' This transforms ordering from guesswork into a systematic chain-building exercise. Crucially, process paragraphs differ from chronological paragraphs: in a chronological paragraph, events are ordered by when they occurred in time; in a process paragraph, steps are ordered by logical dependency — what the procedure requires regardless of temporal markers. By asking the dependency question for every sentence, you build a chain of prerequisites that determines the only correct order.
The correct position of a sentence in a process paragraph is determined not by when the step occurs in time, but by what output from a prior step it requires as input.
Students often mistake process paragraphs for chronological ones and rely on words like 'then,' 'next,' or 'after' to determine order. While these words sometimes align with the correct sequence, they can also appear in positions that obscure the true dependency chain. The dependency chain — not surface-level sequence words — should always be the primary ordering principle.

A sterile nutrient broth is inoculated with a measured volume of the bacterial suspension using a calibrated pipette.
The inoculated broth is placed in an incubator maintained at thirty-seven degrees Celsius and agitated continuously to promote uniform oxygen distribution.

Based on this assessment, a tailored treatment protocol is developed, specifying the cleaning agents, adhesive types, and environmental conditions appropriate for each document.
Treated documents are rehoused in acid-free enclosures and transferred to a climate-controlled storage vault where temperature and humidity are maintained at constant levels.
Fragile manuscripts are assessed by a conservation specialist to determine the extent of physical deterioration and identify the primary agents of damage.
The documents are treated in a controlled conservation lab, where trained technicians carry out the prescribed interventions under the supervision of the specialist.

A sequencing library is prepared by fragmenting the DNA, repairing ends, and ligating platform-specific adapters to each fragment.
The library is loaded onto a flow cell and sequenced by synthesis, generating millions of short reads that are subsequently aligned to a reference genome.
