Level 1: Foundations of Complex Writing
Level 2: Expanding Sentence Range
Level 3: Cohesion and Flow
Level 4: Advanced Structures
Level 5: Mastery and Exam Practice
Master the tools that connect ideas across sentences and paragraphs, creating coherent and well-structured essays.
Coherence and Cohesion is one of the four IELTS Writing criteria and a major factor in PTE Written Discourse scoring. Level 3 focuses entirely on the glue that holds an essay together: the words, patterns, and structural devices that connect one idea to the next.
You will study discourse markers organised by function — adding, contrasting, conceding, concluding — and learn which ones are appropriate for academic writing and which sound conversational. Parallel structure and ellipsis keep your writing elegant and error-free, while advanced conjunctions and sentence-initial adverbials add rhythm and emphasis.
The final chapters show you how relative clauses and thematic progression work as cohesion tools at the paragraph level, so your ideas develop logically from one sentence to the next. By the end of this level, your writing will flow — a requirement for bands 7 and above.
