Practice past continuous: interrupted actions with interactive fill-in-the-blank exercises. This unit is part of the expansion level of our English grammar course, designed for PTE and IELTS test takers.

1
The Past Continuous describes an action that was ongoing or in progress at a specific time in the past. To form it, use 'was' or 'were' + the verb with '-ing'.
2
We often use it together with the Past Simple to show that one longer action was interrupted by a shorter action. For example, 'I was watching TV when the phone rang.'
3
The ongoing background action ('was watching') is the Past Continuous. The short interrupting action ('rang') is the Past Simple. We typically use the word 'when' before the short action, or 'while' before the long action.
