Demonstratives are pointing words. We use them to show exactly which thing or things we are talking about. The word you choose depends on two things: distance and number.

If an object is close to you, use 'this' for one thing, and 'these' for two or more things. For example, 'This is my coffee' or 'These are my shoes'.

If an object is far away from you, use 'that' for one thing, and 'those' for two or more things. For example, 'That is a tall building' or 'Those are stars in the sky'.
