Practice subject pronouns & 'to be' with interactive fill-in-the-blank exercises. This unit is part of the foundations level of our English grammar course, designed for PTE and IELTS test takers.

1
In English, every sentence needs a subject and a verb. The most common verb is 'to be'. It describes who or what someone is, their age, or their feelings.
2
The verb changes depending on the subject. For the pronoun 'I', we use 'am'. For 'He', 'She', and 'It', we use 'is'.
3
For plural subjects like 'We' and 'They', and for the pronoun 'You', we always use 'are'. You can also use short forms, called contractions, like 'I'm' or 'She's'.
