Practice past simple 1: regular verbs and 'to be' with interactive fill-in-the-blank exercises. This unit is part of the foundations level of our English grammar course, designed for PTE and IELTS test takers.

1
We use the Past Simple to talk about finished actions in the past. First, let's look at the verb 'to be'. 'Am' and 'Is' change to 'was'. 'Are' changes to 'were'. For example, 'I was tired' or 'They were happy'.
2
For regular action verbs, we simply add 'ed' to the end of the base verb. For example, 'play' becomes 'played', and 'work' becomes 'worked'.
3
There are some spelling rules for adding 'ed'. If the verb ends in 'e', just add 'd' (like to liked). If it ends in a consonant and 'y', change the 'y' to 'i' and add 'ed' (study to studied).
