Many of the most common verbs in English are irregular. This means they do not end in 'ed' in the past tense. You simply have to memorize them.

For example, 'go' becomes 'went', 'see' becomes 'saw', and 'have' becomes 'had'. He went to the store. She saw a bird. They had a great time.

To make a negative sentence or a question in the Past Simple, we use the helper word 'did'. For a negative, use 'did not' or 'didn't' and the base verb (He didn't go). For a question, start with 'Did' (Did you see that?).
