Practice articles 2: the zero article with interactive fill-in-the-blank exercises. This unit is part of the mastery level of our English grammar course, designed for PTE and IELTS test takers.

1
Sometimes, the correct article is NO article at all. This is called the 'Zero Article'. We use the zero article when talking about plural nouns or uncountable nouns in a general, universal sense.
2
For example, 'Dogs are loyal' (all dogs in general) versus 'The dogs are barking' (specific dogs nearby). We also use the zero article with abstract nouns in a general sense: 'Love is blind', 'Information is power'.
3
Finally, we omit articles for certain institutions when they are used for their primary purpose. For example, 'He went to prison' (as a prisoner) versus 'She went to the prison' (as a visitor). This applies to school, hospital, church, and bed.
