Cause and effect relationships form the backbone of academic argumentation. When a sentence opens with a connector like 'Therefore' or 'Consequently,' it is grammatically bound to a preceding cause — it cannot stand alone as an opening statement. Mastering this directional dependency allows you to lock sentence pairs together, converting a five-sentence puzzle into a series of smaller, more manageable problems.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to identify cause-effect sentence pairs using effect connectors, trace result chains where one effect becomes the next cause, and use these locked pairs to determine the relative order of sentences in any re-order paragraph task.

Sentences that open with effect connectors — words and phrases like 'Therefore,' 'Thus,' 'Consequently,' 'As a result,' 'Hence,' and 'For this reason' — are grammatically dependent on a prior cause. These connectors explicitly signal that the sentence is presenting a consequence or outcome derived from information already stated. Because the cause must logically precede the effect, any sentence beginning with an effect connector can never be the opening sentence of a paragraph. This directional rule is absolute: cause always comes before effect, and the connector word is your reliable marker of which sentence is the effect.
An effect connector at the start of a sentence is a grammatical receipt — it proves that a cause has already been given and the sentence you are reading is its consequence.
Students frequently confuse concessive connectors ('However,' 'Nevertheless') or additive connectors ('Furthermore,' 'Moreover') with cause-effect connectors, treating all transitional words as equivalent order clues. Only connectors that specifically mark consequence or result trigger the cause-before-effect rule.

In complex academic paragraphs, causation often operates in sequential steps: an initial cause produces an effect, which itself becomes the cause of a further effect. Each effect connector in a chain points back to the immediately preceding sentence, not to the original root cause. Recognising this stepwise structure allows you to order multiple sentences by tracing the chain from its origin through each intermediate link to the final outcome. The number of effect connectors in a passage often indicates the number of links in the chain.
In a result chain, every effect connector points to the sentence directly before it — not necessarily to the first sentence in the passage.
Students sometimes attempt to connect every effect sentence directly back to the opening sentence, skipping intermediate links. This causes them to place two effect sentences adjacent to each other without the intermediate cause that connects them.
