Contrast and Shift Connectors

Contrast connectors are among the most frequently tested signal types in PTE Re-order Paragraph tasks, yet many candidates fail to exploit them reliably. The core challenge is deceptively simple: a sentence beginning with 'However' must follow the sentence it is contrasting — but identifying what is being contrasted, and distinguishing genuine contrast from superficial similarity, demands careful reading. This chapter teaches you to recognise both explicit contrast connectors and the subtler, wordless opposition that writers deploy when they expect the reader to infer the shift.

Goal

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to identify explicit contrast connectors and implicit opposition between sentences, and apply the pivot rule to determine their correct sequential order in PTE Re-order Paragraph tasks.

The Pivot Rule

7 exercises

Contrast connectors — such as 'However,' 'Nevertheless,' 'Yet,' 'Although,' 'Conversely,' 'In contrast,' and 'On the other hand' — signal that the writer is about to challenge, reverse, or qualify a claim made in the immediately preceding sentence. Because these connectors are anaphoric, meaning they point backward to what was just stated, the sentence containing the contrast connector can never open a paragraph on its own. The pivot rule states simply: the contrast sentence must follow the sentence that establishes the position being challenged. Identifying this dependency converts two ambiguous sentences into a locked pair.

Key Insight

A sentence beginning with a contrast connector is always reacting to a claim that must appear before it.

Common Mistake

Students sometimes place the contrast sentence first because it feels more dramatic or attention-grabbing. In academic prose, however, a contrast connector is a signal of dependency, not of introduction.

However, recent sampling of abyssal plains far from any vent system has uncovered diverse animal populations sustained primarily by organic matter descending from surface waters hundreds of metres above.

The Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 is conventionally cited as the founding moment of the modern sovereign state system in European political thought.

Central banks in advanced economies have increasingly turned to quantitative easing as a mechanism for stimulating aggregate demand during prolonged periods of sluggish growth.

Critics contend, however, that the resulting asset price inflation has disproportionately benefited wealthier households while doing little to raise real wages for the majority of workers.

On the other hand, ethnographic studies of informal settlements in sub-Saharan African cities reveal that many recent migrants encounter overcrowded schools, inadequate sanitation, and limited economic opportunity upon arrival.

Yet the integration of behavioural insights into mainstream policy frameworks has proceeded slowly, partly because traditional economists question the external validity of laboratory-based findings.

Classical economic theory assumes that individuals make rational decisions based on complete information about available options in any given market.

C

Behavioural economists, however, have documented systematic cognitive biases — including loss aversion and anchoring effects — that consistently distort human judgment in predictable and measurable ways.

More recent scholarship, in contrast, has highlighted the indispensable role of Byzantine scholars who preserved and transmitted Greek philosophical and scientific manuscripts long before Italian humanists encountered them.

This revised perspective does not diminish Italian achievements but rather situates them within a longer, more geographically dispersed intellectual tradition.

C

The prevailing historiography of the European Renaissance emphasises the creative contributions of Italian city-states such as Florence and Venice to the revival of classical learning and artistic innovation.

Subsequent research has shown that environmental factors such as temperature and nutrient availability can further modulate splicing patterns, adding another layer of complexity to the relationship between genotype and phenotype.

B

Nevertheless, the discovery of alternative splicing mechanisms revealed that a single gene can generate multiple distinct protein variants depending on cellular context and developmental stage.

C

The classical model of gene expression held that the DNA sequence alone determines the range of proteins a cell can produce, with each gene encoding a single, fixed protein product.

Contrast Without a Flag

7 exercises

Writers do not always signal opposition with a connector word. In implicit contrast, two sentences present directly opposing claims — one establishing a conventional view, expectation, or model, and the other presenting evidence or reasoning that contradicts it — without any explicit marker such as 'However' or 'In contrast.' Recognising implicit contrast requires you to ask: does Sentence B undermine, reverse, or complicate the claim in Sentence A? If so, Sentence A must come first, regardless of the absence of a connector. This technique also distinguishes true contrast (two separate sentences in opposition) from concession (a single sentence containing both the qualifying clause and the main claim, as in 'Although X, Y').

Key Insight

When two sentences present opposing claims without a connector word, the sentence setting up the baseline expectation must precede the one that subverts it.

Common Mistake

Students who have learned to look for connector words may overlook implicit contrasts entirely, leaving opposing sentences in a sequence that defies logical flow. Others confuse concessive clauses within a single sentence with a two-sentence contrast pattern.

Large-scale empirical studies of recent minimum wage increases across multiple American cities have consistently found negligible effects on overall employment levels in affected sectors.

B

Standard economic models predict that raising the minimum wage results in higher unemployment among low-skilled workers, as employers reduce hiring to offset increased labour costs.

Prevailing theories of democratic consolidation hold that sustained economic development is a necessary precondition for the emergence of stable democratic institutions in any society.

Persistent regional unemployment disparities within single countries — such as the enduring gap between southern and northern Italy — suggest that relocation costs, housing market frictions, and social ties create substantial barriers to labour mobility.

C

Textbook treatments of labour markets typically assume that workers respond fluidly to regional wage differentials, migrating freely between geographic areas and occupational sectors in pursuit of higher earnings.

This reappraisal has prompted researchers to investigate the adaptive functions of nostalgic memory across contexts ranging from coping with loneliness to fostering intergenerational cultural transmission.

B

For much of the twentieth century, psychologists characterised nostalgia as a maladaptive emotion associated with depression, social withdrawal, and an irrational fixation on an idealised past.

C

Contemporary experimental research has demonstrated that inducing nostalgic reflection in laboratory settings actually strengthens social connectedness, enhances self-esteem, and increases optimism about the future.

The discovery of neurogenesis in the hippocampal region of adult laboratory rodents in the 1960s — later confirmed in human subjects through carbon-14 dating techniques — fundamentally undermined this static conception of the mature brain.

B

The classical model of neural development maintained that the adult brain contained a fixed and unchangeable complement of neurons, with no new cells generated after the earliest years of childhood.

C

Nevertheless, the extent to which adult neurogenesis contributes meaningfully to cognitive function remains a subject of active scientific debate, with some recent studies questioning its significance in older adults.
