Addition and sequencing connectors are among the most visible — yet most frequently mishandled — signals in the Re-order Paragraph task. Words like Moreover, Furthermore, Firstly, and Finally create grammatical commitments between sentences, effectively locking them into fixed positions relative to one another. Mastering these connectors transforms a daunting five-sentence puzzle into a chain of predictable, smaller steps.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to identify addition connectors that extend an argument and sequencing connectors that guarantee a fixed ordinal chain, and use both to determine the correct order of sentences with confidence.

Addition connectors — words and phrases such as Moreover, Furthermore, Additionally, In addition, and Also — signal that the sentence they introduce extends, reinforces, or builds upon the content of the preceding sentence. The grammatical logic is straightforward: an addition connector presupposes that a claim has already been made, so the sentence carrying the connector cannot open a paragraph. When multiple addition connectors appear across several sentences, they create a stacking pattern in which each sentence adds a new layer to the accumulating argument, and the order becomes progressively more rigid. This stacking effect is what makes addition connectors powerful 'iron links' that lock sentences into consecutive positions.
A sentence beginning with Moreover or Furthermore can never be the first sentence in a paragraph — it always follows the claim it extends.
Students often confuse addition connectors with topic-shift markers, mistakenly believing that Furthermore can introduce a new topic rather than extend an existing one. This leads them to place addition sentences at the beginning of a paragraph when they belong later.

Ordinal sequencing connectors — including Firstly, Secondly, Thirdly, Finally, Initially, Subsequently, Next, and phrases like the first step or in the concluding phase — assign a fixed numerical or temporal position to each sentence within a chain. Unlike addition connectors, which allow some flexibility in ordering, sequencing connectors create an absolute lock: Firstly must precede Secondly, which must precede Thirdly, and so on. This chapter also addresses the critical distinction between addition connectors, where order is somewhat flexible, and sequencing connectors, where order is mathematically determined. Recognising this distinction prevents students from treating ordinal markers as mere synonyms for Moreover.
Numbered sequencing connectors (First, Second, Third) create guaranteed ordinal chains where the order is mathematically determined — no interpretation is required.
Students sometimes treat sequencing connectors as interchangeable with addition connectors, assuming that Thirdly is merely a synonym for Moreover. This causes them to underestimate the strictness of the ordinal chain and place sentences in the wrong sequence.
