Chain Building — Locking 3+ Sentences Into a Sequence

When a paragraph contains five scrambled sentences, identifying individual sentence pairs is necessary but insufficient. The real power comes from locking multiple pairs into a confirmed chain — a guaranteed sub-sequence that reduces an overwhelming combinatorial problem to a single placement decision. This chapter teaches you to extend the iron-link skills from Chapters 1–6 into multi-sentence chains, starting with the most certain link and extending outward until the full order emerges.

Goal

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to build confirmed chains of three, four, or five sentences by combining multiple link types and applying the chain-building protocol to solve complete paragraph-ordering problems.

Extending a Pair Outward Into a Chain

9 exercises

The chain-building protocol is a systematic method for extending a confirmed sentence pair into a longer guaranteed sequence. The core principle is simple: always begin with the most certain link — the pair where the grammatical binding is strongest and least ambiguous — and then extend outward in both directions. To extend, check whether either sentence in your locked pair contains a word, phrase, or reference that points to another sentence. If it does, that new sentence can be added to the chain. The process repeats until no further extensions are possible or all sentences are included in the confirmed sequence.

Key Insight

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link — so start with the pair you are most certain about and let the other sentences fall into place around it.

Common Mistake

Students often try to build the chain from the first sentence forward, treating it like a reading task. The protocol works in the opposite direction: find the tightest grammatical bond first, regardless of position, and extend from there.

Mixed-Type Chains

10 exercises

Real academic paragraphs rarely use just one type of grammatical link. A single five-sentence paragraph might contain an article shift, a pronoun chain, two demonstrative references, and a contrast pivot — all woven together. Mixed-type chain building means recognising that each consecutive pair in your chain may be bound by a different mechanism. The skill is not applying one technique repeatedly but identifying which technique applies at each link point. When a chain spans from the first anchor to the last anchor — using different link types at each connection — the full paragraph order is solved.

Key Insight

Each link in a chain can be forged by a different mechanism; the key is to identify which signal type binds each specific pair, not to force a single pattern across the entire paragraph.

Common Mistake

Students sometimes assume that because a paragraph uses pronouns, every link must be pronoun-based. In reality, the first link might be an article shift, the second a demonstrative reference, and the third a contrast signal — and missing any one of them breaks the chain.
