Synthesis Sprint — Mixed Link Type Practice

After seven chapters of focused, single-strategy practice, this chapter deliberately mixes all six link types within a single practice session. Research on interleaved practice consistently shows that mixing strategies — even though it feels harder — produces significantly better long-term retention and exam performance than continued blocked practice. The challenge now is not merely to recognise a pronoun reference or a contrast connector in isolation, but to scan each sentence pair, name the link type present, and prioritise which link should govern your ordering decision.

Goal

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to identify, prioritise, and apply multiple link types simultaneously within a single paragraph under timed conditions.

The Multi-Link Triage Method

10 exercises

In a real PTE Re-order Paragraph task, a single passage may contain pronoun references, cause-effect connectors, chronological markers, contrast pivots, example signals, and definite article introductions — often all at once. The Multi-Link Triage Method teaches you to scan every sentence pair and name the link type present before attempting to order the sentences. By identifying the strongest, most unambiguous link first — usually a pronoun or definite article that creates a mandatory pair — you can anchor part of the sequence and then use secondary signals such as chronological markers or contrast connectors to position the remaining sentences. This systematic approach prevents the common trap of fixating on one link type while ignoring others that may be even more decisive.

Key Insight

When multiple link types compete for your attention, always identify the mandatory pair first — the link that creates an unbreakable two-sentence unit — then use secondary signals to place that unit within the larger sequence.

Common Mistake

Students often latch onto the first link they recognise — typically a cause-effect connector like 'therefore' or 'consequently' — and build their entire order around it, ignoring pronoun or definite article references that would have established a more reliable anchor pair. Another frequent error is treating chronological markers as always decisive, when sometimes a contrast pivot or example signal overrides the timeline.
