The Funnel Method (General → Specific)

In the PTE Re-order Paragraph task, many paragraphs follow a recognisable logical architecture: they begin with a broad, general claim and progressively narrow toward specific evidence and data. This 'funnel' pattern is the most common organisational structure in academic writing, yet students often miss it because they focus on individual sentences rather than reading the paragraph as a coherent argument. Mastering the funnel method allows you to determine sentence order even when no grammatical markers — no articles, pronouns, or transition words — are present.

Goal

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to rank sentences by their level of abstraction and arrange them in the general-to-specific order that defines the funnel structure of academic paragraphs.

The Abstraction Ladder

9 exercises

Academic paragraphs typically follow a funnel structure, moving from abstract, general claims toward increasingly concrete, specific details. The 'abstraction ladder' is a mental tool for ranking each sentence on a scale from most abstract to most concrete. General claims establish the topic and could appear in any essay on that subject; theoretical explanations narrow the focus to a mechanism, framework, or category; concrete examples name specific cases, institutions, or events; and specific data provides numbers, dates, and measured outcomes. By identifying where each sentence falls on this ladder, you can determine its likely position in the paragraph. This approach works because academic writers follow a shared convention: establish the general principle before presenting the evidence that supports it.

Key Insight

The most general sentence — the one that could appear in any essay about the topic — almost always comes first.

Common Mistake

Students often place specific data sentences first because they are attention-grabbing or because they contain the most 'information.' In academic writing, however, specific data typically serves as evidence for a preceding claim, not as an opening.

Example Sentences Always Follow the Claim

9 exercises

When a sentence contains an example marker — 'for example,' 'for instance,' 'such as,' or 'including' — it cannot stand alone. It depends on a preceding claim that it illustrates. This rule creates a firm structural link: the example sentence must come after the general claim it exemplifies. The claim establishes a category, principle, or pattern; the example provides a concrete instance. Additionally, when two sentences appear to be at the same level of abstraction, you need a tiebreaker — look for signals like 'Similarly' (parallel example), 'by contrast' (contrasting example), 'However' (qualification), or structural dependencies where one sentence references or extends the other.

Key Insight

An example sentence without its claim is like an answer without a question — it is structurally incomplete and must follow the claim it supports.

Common Mistake

Students sometimes place example sentences early because the specific detail feels like a 'hook' or opening, or because they confuse 'for instance' with an introductory signal rather than a dependent one that requires a preceding claim.
