Comparatives: Comparing two things

We use comparative adjectives to compare exactly two things. To form them, we look at the length of the adjective.

For short adjectives (one syllable), add '-er'. 'Tall' becomes 'taller'. If the short word ends in 'y', change the 'y' to 'i' and add '-er'. 'Happy' becomes 'happier'.

For long adjectives (two or more syllables), put the word 'more' before the adjective. 'Expensive' becomes 'more expensive'. The word 'than' often follows the comparative: 'A car is faster than a bicycle'. Finally, remember the irregulars: 'good' becomes 'better' and 'bad' becomes 'worse'.
