Practice conditionals 3: third conditional (past regrets) with interactive fill-in-the-blank exercises. This unit is part of the mastery level of our English grammar course, designed for PTE and IELTS test takers.

1
The Third Conditional is used to talk about things in the past that did NOT happen, and imagining the result. Because the past cannot be changed, these are impossible situations, often used for regrets or relief.
2
Structure: If + Past Perfect, would have + past participle. For example, 'If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.' (Reality: I didn't study, and I failed).
3
You can also make them negative: 'If we hadn't missed the train, we wouldn't have been late.' Or use 'could have' to talk about past ability: 'If I had known, I could have helped you.'
