The Past Perfect is used to make it clear that one past action happened before another past action. Think of it as the 'past in the past'.

We form it using 'had' + the past participle. For example, 'When I arrived at the station, the train had left.' The train leaving happened first (Past Perfect), and my arrival happened second (Past Simple).

We frequently use words like 'already', 'just', 'before', 'by the time', and 'after' with the Past Perfect to clarify the timeline of events. 'I was hungry because I hadn't eaten.'
