Every Re-order Paragraph has exactly one sentence that must come first and one that must come last. Locking these two anchors is the single highest-impact move in the entire task: it converts a full permutation problem into a much smaller arrangement of the middle sentences. With five scrambled sentences and no anchors identified, you face one hundred and twenty possible arrangements. Identify both the first and last sentences, and you are left with only six possible arrangements of the three middle sentences. The combinatorial complexity collapses by a factor of twenty.
Yet most candidates learn to spot the first sentence and stop there. They identify the opening sentence correctly but leave the closing sentence unanchored, which still leaves thirty-six possible arrangements of the middle four sentences. The asymmetry between anchor identification and anchor elimination is costly, and it is entirely avoidable.
This section exists to give you both endpoints. You will learn to identify the first sentence using three distinct detection methods, recognise the closing sentence using four recognised types, disqualify impostor sentences that cannot anchor the paragraph, and adapt your recognition pattern to the conventions of each academic domain. After this section, you will lock both ends of any paragraph before touching the middle.
Academic paragraphs follow strict conventions for their opening and closing sentences. The first sentence introduces a broad topic using context-independent language. It makes complete sense to a reader who has never encountered any other sentence in the paragraph. It contains no anaphoric pronouns such as "this" or "these," no sequencing words like "subsequently" or "furthermore," and no definite articles pointing back to paragraph-specific content. The opening sentence establishes what the paragraph is about before the writer narrows into evidence and detail.
The closing sentence performs a rhetorical landing. It summarises, evaluates, or extends the argument without introducing new material that would require further development. It typically contains concluding language such as "Therefore," "Consequently," "Taken together," or "This suggests that." A closing sentence that introduces an entirely new sub-topic is almost always a misidentification, because academic paragraphs do not open new lines of inquiry in their final sentence.
Consider a concrete example. You are given four scrambled sentences about the Rosetta Stone. Sentence C reads: "The Rosetta Stone, discovered by French soldiers in Egypt in 1799, proved to be one of the most consequential archaeological finds in history." It introduces the subject with a full name and a broad evaluative claim, and it contains no backward-pointing references. It passes the context independence test. Sentence D reads: "His breakthrough unlocked thousands of previously indecipherable texts and inaugurated the modern discipline of Egyptology." The pronoun "His" requires a named individual to have been introduced first, and the evaluative language "inaugurated the modern discipline" signals a concluding move. You have now locked both anchors: C is first, D is last. The remaining two sentences, B and A, need only be arranged between these fixed endpoints.
Equally important is knowing which sentences cannot anchor the paragraph. A sentence beginning with "However" is responding to a prior claim. A sentence beginning with "These findings" requires the findings to have been presented first. A sentence beginning with "Subsequent investigations" presupposes that earlier investigations were discussed. These are structural disqualifiers that instantly eliminate candidates from anchor positions, reducing the number of sentences you need to evaluate.

The Context Independence Test asks a single question: could a stranger with no background information understand this sentence completely? If the sentence introduces a concept using general language that does not presuppose any previously mentioned content, it passes the test and is a candidate for the opening position. This is the most reliable starting point for any re-order paragraph because academic writing consistently establishes context before elaborating.
Scope-Setting Language recognises that opening sentences typically employ phrases that sweep broadly across time ("For decades," "Throughout history"), geography ("Across diverse economies"), or concept ("One of the most significant..."). These signals are reliable because writers must orient the reader before introducing specific evidence. The first sentence almost always contains language that frames the topic at the broadest possible level.
Full Name Introduction exploits the convention that entities are formally introduced before being referenced with abbreviations, shortened names, or pronouns. A sentence containing a full name followed by a sentence using a pronoun or abbreviation is a reliable signal that the full-name sentence comes first. This pattern holds across all academic domains.
The Four Closing Types categorise every paragraph ending into one of four rhetorical moves: a summary closing that restates the central claim, a consequence closing that draws a cause-effect result, an implication closing that extends the argument beyond the paragraph's evidence, and a resolution closing that solves a problem raised in the paragraph. Recognising which type you are looking at tells you immediately that the sentence belongs at the end.
Impostor Elimination trains you to disqualify sentences that cannot anchor the paragraph by recognising transition words ("However," "Therefore"), demonstrative pronouns ("These," "This"), sequencing markers ("Subsequently," "Furthermore"), and unresolved personal pronouns ("He," "They") as structural disqualifiers. This is the fastest way to reduce a complex arrangement problem to a manageable one.
Domain-Specific Patterns teach you that science passages open by naming a phenomenon, history passages open by situating events in a temporal frame, economics passages open with a conceptual definition, and social science passages open with a trend observation. Recognising these genre conventions gives you a second strategy for locating anchors when context-independent testing alone is insufficient.
This section contains six chapters that build anchor identification in layers.
The first three chapters cover first-sentence detection: the Broad Noun Principle tests context independence, the General Preamble recognises scope-setting language, and the Full Name Introduction exploits the formal-to-informal referencing convention. Each chapter contains targeted exercises that practise one detection method in isolation before combining them.

The fifth chapter covers impostor elimination, with exercises that ask you to identify which sentences cannot open or close a paragraph rather than which one can. This inversion of the problem is the fastest path to reducing the candidate set.
